How long should I book you for? That's totally dependent on the event but if you want me for a dance set only, I recommend 3-4 hours. If you want some music while you eat and drink and as guests arrive, check out my 6 hour package. I also offer an all-day package if you want me to take care of your ceremony music.
What is included in your fees? Everything is included in the quote that I send through to you based on the information that you give me. There are no hidden costs but adjustments may need to be made if you change anything that you were originally quoted for. Check out my packages to see what is generally included in a quoted price.
Where do you travel to and what if my venue is out of the Christchurch region? I travel within 30kms of central Christchurch with no additional fees. Outside of this, there may be a travel fee and an accommodation fee for events that are 1.5 hours away or more. Some places that I may be available to travel to depending on availability are: Otago (Wanaka, Queenstown, Lake Tekapo), South Canterbury (Geraldine, Timaru, Ashburton), Banks Peninsula (Rolleston, Akaroa, Tai Tapu), North Canterbury (Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Hanmer Springs, Kaikoura), Tasman Region (Nelson, Blenheim). Any areas outside of these would require a plane ticket!
I don't understand your packages, what does it all mean? If you are really struggling with the whole thing, the easiest quickest way for me to answer this is to chat to you either on the phone or via email. Basically when you hire a DJ you are paying for me to provide the musical entertainment for your event, whether that be Djing, Karaoke of a mixture of both. I have a full costume wardrobe so I can rock up in gear to match your theme. I will bring professional sound and lighting equipment as required and will purchase any additional tracks that I don't already have. I will curate playlists for your event but will also play on the fly according to your needs and crowd requests etc. I will set up and pack down outside of the hours you have booked me for. I will be available for you to ask questions, clarify things, add or subtract any songs and give you advice/ideas about how to make your event a success!
Do you have a contract? When you book with me, I will send you my terms & conditions of service which act like a contract for both parties.
Why should I book you? You have so many quality entertainment options to choose from in Christchurch, from DJs to singers to full shows! I understand how overwhelming it all is! Think about why you want to hirer an entertainer and what you wish your event to be like. Think about the venue and location and what is practical in that space at that time. Also think about your audience/guests and what would suit the majority of people there best. The best DJ for you should tick all of your boxes, and that depends on what is important to you. Previous clients that have given me feedback and reviews have said that: I'm fun, play good dance music, allow requests and curate custom playlists, I'm approachable, have affordable/rates, provide quality sound and lighting, I'm professional and I'm good at communicating. Rest assured, I value all of my bookings as my top priority and schedule my other life commitments around them.
Do you offer any special rates/deals? At certain quieter times of the year or days of the week, you might see me add a special rate to your quote. Most of my bookings are weddings and most weddings are held between October to March, but outside of these months you may receive an off-peak discount!
What do most DJs charge? Most DJs charge anywhere from $500 - $2000. There is actually quite a large variety of fees based on experience, quality of equipment, the type of DJ they are, the size and needs of the event and if there are travel and accommodation costs involved. I try to keep my prices fair and reasonable while factoring in my business costs and time. It doesn't always work out cheaper to hire your own equipment, but it's possible if you can't afford a DJ that the venue might have an epic sound system for you to plug into. If this is the case for you and you still want the expertise and experience of a DJ, let me know and I may be able to offer you a special rate.
Why do DJs charge what they do? As mentioned above, there is a lot more to DJing then just pushing play. There are significant costs to operating a professional DJ business such as insurances, subscriptions, advertising, training, equipment replacement and maintenance, tax filing...Just like every other business, there is a lot more to it than meets the eye! DJ's charge what they do so that they can continue to do what they love!
Can I choose my own music? Yes of course! Some clients send me a full playlist and some send me ideas and genres that they like. As you are the person hiring me, I will play whatever music you wish to hear! If you have no idea about what kind of music you want, I can curate some playlists prior to send through to you to review, or just read the crowd on the night.
What kind of music do you play? Anything and everything! Most of my clients book me for events where I will be playing dance music, bangers, sing-a-longs, bootie shakers, line dances, throwbacks...that's really up to you!
Do you talk a lot on the microphone during songs? Not at all, it's not my style. In my personal experience you can never really make out what the DJ is saying in that scenario anyway and I believe it can interrupt the good time you are having with your friends on the dancefloor. I will be concentrating on playing the right songs at the right time rather than hogging the spotlight. During karaoke events, expect a bit of talking from me as I need to let singers know that it's their time to sing!
What should I ask the venue prior to booking with them if I am thinking about hiring a DJ? Ask if there are any noise restrictions, if the venue allows a hazer machine, if there is any flexibility in where the DJ can be placed and if they have an adequate power source. Check with the venue the time that will be available for the DJ to set up and pack down before and after the event and if there is parking for vendors.
